Troop 1 Parents Meeting Monday March 4, 2002 PRESENT: Dave Berns, Ken Boss, Bruce Demsky, Mary
Euritt, Dana Jenson, Chris Klaren, and Lisa Musgrave OLD BUSINESS: 1) Review/approve previous
meeting minutes – the minutes were approved. 2) Treasure's report –
currently the troop has $2537 in the general fund and individual accounts
combined (approx. $1500 in scout accounts).
This balance includes the WalMart and Scout Sunday pancake breakfast
ticket sales, but does not include the individual scout sales or the WalMart
match. 2.a) Unpaid Troop and
Order of the Arrow dues – Last year the Parent’s Committee approved the
assessment of $40 per scout annual dues to pay for B.S.A. scout annual fees,
Boy’s Life subscriptions, and rank and patrol patches. These dues are for the 12 months from
March 1 through the last day of February the following year. In the past year over half of the scouts
have not paid the dues for 2001-2002.
Also, a number of scouts did not pay their Order of the Arrow dues
last fall that the troop picked up.
We acknowledge that the committee did not follow-up during the year
with the dues payments, and in light of the troop’s current favorable
financial position, the committee agreed to wave the troop fees for 2002-2003
for those scouts that were paid for the previous year. Those that did not pay, in addition to the
new scouts, will need to pay the $40 troop fee for 2002-2003, and that amount
is due and payable now. The group did
not discuss the delinquent Order of the Arrow fees, however, it should be
expected that any delinquent O.A. dues are the responsibility of the
individual scouts and should be reimbursed to the troop as soon as
possible. Note that either or both of
these fees can be paid with the individual scout accounts if their balance
can cover it. The committee agreed
that a list of scouts owing dues will be sent with this message and future
meeting minutes and newsletters as a reminder. 3) Review activities for
last month: 3.a) Rank advancements – Luke Jenson met the requirements of the Star rank board of review and will be awarded his rank advancement at an upcoming scout meeting. Congratulations Luke! 3.b) Sundance District
Swim program sign-up – The B.S.A. Lifeguard training started Feb 27. The Swimming and Lifesaving merit badges begin
March 13. The scouts must be able to
pass the summer camp “blue swimmer” test on March 13 to continue the
program. Dana Jenson and Steve Murphy
are contacting local indoor pools to reserve pool time before March 13 to
provide a quick skills refresher.
Arrangements will be communicated when they are determined. 3.c) Clear Lake Merit
Badge College and Leader Training – Five scouts traveled to the merit badge
college March 2 and earned all seven of the merit badges they were registered
for. Steve Murphy attended leader
training and is officially an assistant scoutmaster for Troop 1. Thank you Steve for assisting in this
leadership role. 3.d) Pancake Breakfast:
total sales, WalMart match, Flapjackers payment – The scouts sold 391
tickets, received a WalMart match of $463.32, and received donations at
WalMart of $107.32. The pancake
breakfast was well attended considering the wintry weather that was
experienced, and our scouts did a great job of working at the event. The Flapjackers are meeting Wednesday
night to determine their expenses and the ticket rebates to the troops. A thank-you to WalMart was signed by the
scouts at the March 3 troop meeting and will be presented to WalMart after
being signed by the leaders. 3.e) Scout candy bar sales
– Contact Al if you want to participate in this Scout council fund-raising
activity. This is a good opportunity
to build up your scout account. 4) Review scheduled
activities for current month: 4.a) Offut Air Force Base
outing March 9-10 – This trip has been postponed due to lodging difficulties
and may be rescheduled lather this spring or early summer. 5) Philmont high adventure
registration (summer 2004, sign up early 2002) – Several weeks ago Al
commented that he had called the scout office and they informed him that 2004
registration will take place in November 2002. 6) Boundary Waters
planning – In a prior conversation, Steve Murphy indicated he will be
establishing a sub-committee for the trip planning. Gene Ott, representing our outfitter, Pac Sac, is expected to
be at the UNI Dome Sports Show in March.
The scouts prepared a list of questions for the outfitter at the last
troop meeting. 7) Chili supper for
boundary waters fundraising – no one in attendance had any information. 8) Letter to scout office
regarding food at 2001 summer camp – The committee reviewed the letter
drafted by Chris expressing our concern over the appalling food and approved
it to be sent to the scout office. NEW BUSINESS: 1) Troop rechartering – Al recently received the troop charter renewal from the scout office with a due date of April 1 to return it. The troop committee reviewed various portions of the accompanying documents and advised Al & Chris to proceed with the process. 2) Other new business - there was no other new business, and the meeting was adjourned.
