Troop 1 Parents Meeting

Sunday June 9, 2002

(Note that a Parents Meeting was not held in May)

PRESENT:  Al Degenhardt, Bruce Demsky, Mary Euritt, Dana Jenson, Greg Kent, Chris Klaren, Steve Murphy, Lisa Musgrave, Marijo Petullo, Mike Potter

OLD BUSINESS:

1) Review/approve previous meeting minutes – the minutes were approved.

2) Treasure's report – As of may 22, the bank balance was $2221.10.  Approximately $300 in checks are yet to be deposited from the May campout, and $1320 of the balance consists of the scouts’ individual accounts, $300 is for trailer shelves, leaving about $900 in the general fund.

3) Review activities for last month:

3.a) Rank advancements – One scout completed his First Class rank last month, and another has nearly completed his First Class rank.

3.b) Sundance District Swim Program wrap-up (swimming & lifesaving merit badges, B.S.A. Lifeguard certification) - 16 scouts earned either the Swimming or Lifesaving merit badges during the Sundance swim program, and they will be distributed at an upcoming troop meeting.  3 of the adults participating in the boundary Waters trip this summer completed their B.S.A Lifeguard certification.  Great job scouts and adults!

3.c) Ingawanis Campout, Work/Electronics Weekend April 13-14 – The scouts did a great job of pitching-in to clean up the camp and had a great time during the weekend.

3.d) Canoeing campout May 18-19 – The troop enjoyed a 9 mile trip during 3-1/2 hours on the Maquoketa River near Monticello and enjoyed the overnight campout.  It was noted that all canoes remained upright during the trip.

3.e) Canoeing Practice the Cedar river June 8 – the troop completed another in a series of canoe trips in anticipation of the August Boundary Waters trip.  After experiencing some portaging to get their canoes in the water, everyone had a good time during the 10 mile, 4 hour trip from Ingawanis to Black Hawk Park in Cedar Falls.  It was again noted that all canoes remained upright during the trip and all the scouts seemed to have no problem staying with the group.  Good job!

4) Review scheduled activities for current month:

4.a) Canoeing Practice campout on Upper Iowa River June 22-23 – This campout is again strongly encouraged for the Boundary Waters participants, and of course is open to the entire troop.  The troop will leave Saturday morning and return noonish on Sunday.  Details (travel times and costs) will be determined at the June 16 scout meeting.  Patrol leaders will be contacted early this week to determine the attendance from their patrols so canoes can be reserved at the scout office.

4.b) Canoeing Practice, location to be determined, July 6 – This one day outing will be used to review emergency techniques for dealing with capsized canoes in deep water.  The purpose is for everyone to learn the techniques for getting back into a capsized canoe and retrieve their gear, as well as have some fun during the day.  Locations discussed were Backbone Lake and George Wyth.  Highly recommended (nearly mandatory) for the Boundary Waters group.

5) Summer Camp July 14-20 – Al will contact the parents of the scouts registered for summer camp to confirm participation and merit badge registration.

6) Boundary Waters planning – Information was shared in the meeting immediately preceding this parents meeting and will be posted on the troop web site.  Plans were made to hold a Pancake Breakfast fundraiser on July 21 in the St. Ed’s church basement after each mass.  The group will meet again in 2 weeks.  NOTE:  ALL TRIP PARTICPANTS MUST HAVE A COMPLETED CLASS 3 MEDICAL FORM BEFORE THEY ARE ALLOWED TO GO ON THE TRIP.  Contact Chris Klaren to get a copy or download it from the Winnebago Council website at http://www.scouting.org/forms/33412.pdf

7) Fall Camporee Planning – Al described the initial Fall Camporee meeting that was held recently.  The camporee will be at Black hawk park in Cedar Falls and is being hosted by our Troop 1 and Troop 55 from Cedar Falls.  Two merit badges will be offered, Cinematography and Indian Lore, both which may require some prework.  The event will be held in Black Hawk Park Sep 20-22 and approximately 700 people are expected.  Al believes we will need 6-9 volunteers to staff various committees including:

    Activities (2 from Troop1)

Camping, Registration, and Facilities (2 from Troop 1)

    Promotions (1 from Troop 1)

    Training (2 from Troop 1)

    Setup/Security (2 from Troop 1, Steve & Dana volunteered)

PLEASE contact Al or Chris to help fill these positions, as volunteers are the key ingredients in making this a successful and meaningful event for the scouts.  The first meetings for the committees are scheduled for June 19, and will meet on Wednesdays (not sure of this is every Wednesday) thereafter as needed.

8) Troop trailer insurance – This item tabled until the next meeting.

9) Trailer shelves – This item tabled until the next meeting.

10) Waterskiing merit badge – Tabled until the next meeting.
