Troop 1 Parents Meeting Sunday July 7, 2002 PRESENT: Dave Berns, Ken Boss, Al
Degenhardt, Bruce Demsky, Mary Euritt, Chris Klaren, Steve Murphy, Lisa
Musgrave, Marijo Petullo, Mike Potter OLD BUSINESS: 1) Review/approve previous
meeting minutes – the minutes were approved. 2) Treasure's report – no
report was available as Dana was not at the meeting. 3) Review activities for
last month: 3.a) Rank advancements –
Al has the Swimming and Lifesaving merit badges that were completed in
May. They will be awarded at the next
scout meeting after summer camp. 3.b) Canoeing practice on
the Cedar River, June 8 – The 10 mile trip took about 4 hours to
complete. None of the canoes capsized
and everyone seemed to have a good time.
The only injuries experienced were sunburns on two of the accompanying
adults. 3.c) Canoeing Campout on
the Upper Iowa River, June 29-30 – This turned out to be a nice, but very
warm weekend, perfect for a water activity.
The first day the troop canoed from Kendallville to the overnight
campsite at Bluffton. After breaking
camp Sunday morning, the group traveled 2 hours down the river to a
predetermined access to a local road where they were picked up by campsite
personnel and returned to Kendallville.
This was a good training trip for the Boundary Waters. 3.d) Canoeing Skills
Practice, July 6 – Nearly everyone had an opportunity to experience emptying
and climbing back in a capsized and swamped canoe before the thunder and
lightning moved in and closed the fishing lake at George Wyth Park. We intend to practice these skills (under
supervised and controlled conditions) the first day or two of the Boundary
Waters trip. 4) Review scheduled
activities for current month: 4.a) Summer Camp at
Ingawanis, July 14-20 – Six scouts are currently planning to attend. Please pay the $155 registration fees to
Dana Jenson by the end of this week (make checks payable to Troop 1). Contact Dana to find the balance for your
scout’s accounts if you would like to apply some or all of it to the camp
fee. Troop 1 will be sharing a
campsite with Troop 144 from Grace Lutheran Church. Parents’ night will be Friday evening, with the meal served
5:45 – 7:00. Cost for the meal is $5
per visitor. Scouts and parents will meet at Kimball Ridge parking lot at
10:30 Sunday, July 14. Scouts are to
wear their Class A uniforms (including the red t-shirts) during the trip to
Ingawanis. Scouts need to bring their
updated Class 1 and 2 medical forms Sunday at Kimball Ridge. A copy of the class 3 form that some
scouts have for boundary waters will be OK also. Any medicines needed by the scouts during the week must be in
the original containers complete with the pharmacy label indicating contents,
doctor’s name, scout name, dosages, etc.
All medicines for a scout should be enclosed in one zip-lock bag with
the scout’s name on the bag. Steve
Murphy will pull the troop trailer to and from Ingawanis. Camp ends 10:30 Saturday morning, and the scouts will be
returned home by Al and Steve at that time, unless the parents make other
plans. Please contact Al if there are
any questions regarding summer camp. 4.b) Boundary Waters Pancake Breakfast Sunday, July 28 – The church basement has been reserved for the revised date. Marijo will work with the patrol leaders to schedule scouts for ticket sales after each mass the next three weekends. 4.c) Boundary Waters,
August 3-11 – The group discussed different methods of packing clothing to
insure watertight protection during the trip. The boundary waters group will meet at least once more before
the trip to address any issues or concerns.
The $200 remaining balance for scouts and adults on the trip needs to
be paid to Dana before leaving on August 3.
The troop needs to fill four openings on the trip due to changes in
plans of some of the scouts and adults that previously intended to attend. 5) Fall Camporee planning
(Sep 20-22) – This item was inadvertently skipped during the meeting, but the
following should provide a quick update:
The first planning meeting was held last month a another is planned
for July 17 at the scout office. Al
is chairman of the event, and Dana, Steve, and Chris are members of the
Camping and Setup subcommittees. We
are in need off volunteers for the Activities, Promotions, and Training
subcommittees (2-3 people total) to assist with the planning. In addition, we will need a number of
parents during the Camporee weekend to run or help with the many functions
needed for a successful event. Please
contact Al, Dana, Steve, or Chris to help with the subcommittee planning. 6) Troop trailer insurance
(Al) – deferred 7) Trailer shelves – Ken
and Chris will get together with Al in the next month to sketch out some
ideas for the shelves. 8) Water-skiing merit badge
(Tom) - deferred NEW BUSINESS: 1) Popcorn sales – Al said that the troop is signed up for popcorn sales this fall. Lisa agreed to chair the popcorn sales for the troop this year. 2) No-show policy for campout fees – The group had a short discussion regarding scouts that register for troop activities and then do not show up. These scouts (and adults) will be assessed the full campout/activity fee to cover the cost of equipment rental (canoes, etc.), campsite fees, and food that the troop purchases for all of the scouts signed-up for the activity. This fee will be waived if the scout or parent contacts Al or another adult leader 2 or more days in advance of the activity. 3) Camping & Activity schedule 2002-2003 – Earlier at the troop meeting, the scouts brainstormed a list of activities they would like to do during the year beginning October 2002. They will refine the list during upcoming troop meetings and work with the troop leadership and Parents Committee to plan the activities. NEXT PARENTS MEETING: Monday August 12, 7:00 PM,
St. Ed’s cafeteria – NOTE THIS IS A CHANGE IN WHAT WAS DISCUSSED AT THE
MEETING, AS THE BOUNDARY WATERS GROUP WILL BE RETURNING ON SUNDAY AUG

to Aug 11 if the group returns Sat. Aug 10. TABLED FOR FUTURE
