Troop 1 Parents Meeting Monday September 9, 2002 PRESENT: Ken Boss, Mary Euritt, Dana
Jenson, Chris Klaren, Mike Pedersen OLD BUSINESS: 1) Review/approve previous
meeting - the minutes were approved. 2) Treasure's report – no report
was available. 3) Review activities for
last month: 3.a) Rank advancements – Brian
Klaren completed his Eagle Scout Board of Review in August, and two other
scouts are in the process of completing their Eagle paperwork. All of the scouts attending the Boundary
Waters trip received their Canoeing merit badge. 3.b) Backbone Campout, Aug 24-25. 11 scouts and 4 adults attended the weekend campout. It was very relaxing and everyone had a great time. 4) Review scheduled
activities for current month: 4.a) Fall Camporee,
September 20-22. Planning has been underway
for several months for this event that is being co-hosted by Troop 1. Two merit badges are being offered (Indian
Lore and Cinematography) and there are lots of activities for all of the
scouts. The Mesqwaki Indians will
have a group with a mini-pow-wow demonstration during the day and at closing
ceremonies. We need to get a
head-count at the next troop meeting (Sep 15) for everyone that will be
attending. PARENTS: You will be
contacted to volunteer for the various staffing needs throughout the
weekend. Please be generous with your
time to help make this a successful and memorable event for the scouts. 4.b) Merit badge make-up
day, Ingawanis, Oct 5, 9:00 AM to Noon.
Many scouts were not able to complete their merit badge requirements
while at summer camp. The council has
made arrangements for the summer camp merit badge counselors to be available to
meet with scouts to review the completion of the requirements. Scouts will need to finish any work that
is needed and bring it to camp for the counselor's review. The troop is expected to organize a troop
activity to attend this event. This
is a great opportunity to finish the merit badges once and for all! 5) 2002/2003 camping &
activity planning update – Al was not in attendance and this item was deferred
to next month. 6) Popcorn sales update – Scout
popcorn sales will begin Sep 27 and end Nov 6, with delivery scheduled to
begin Nov 16. The scouts voted last
week to receive all profit instead of a combination of prizes and loser
profits for the sales they make. These
profits will be distributed in their individual troop accounts for them to
use either for campout fees or scout office purchases. This is a big fundraiser for the troop and
can only be successful with everyone’s participation. Sales information will be distributed at
the next scout meeting. 7) Trailer shelves
update. Trailer shelves were
purchased by Ken and Chris following the last parents meeting for
approximately $180. Ken, Steve, and
Chris installed them a week or so later and they were successfully field
tested at the Backbone campout – what an improvement! Straps with buckles are being made to
secure the loads on the shelves (replacing the temporary bungee cords). Several more large plastic containers may
be purchased to improve the storage capabilities. NEW BUSINESS: 1) Scouting for
Food/Goodwill, Oct 12-19. Tentative
plans are to collaborate with the Pack 25 Cub Scouts this year, with Pack 25
distributing bags on Oct 12 and Troop 1 picking them up the following
Saturday, Oct 19. This year, for the first
time, Winnebago Council is partnering with Goodwill to for a Scouting for
Goodwill pickup at the same time. Al
and Dana will discuss this at the district round table Thursday night to determine
if we should do the Food only or both. 2) Merit Badge College,
Nov 2. Information on the upcoming
merit badge college has been distributed for return no later than Monday, Sep
16. Scouts may take one or two merit
badges during the day. More
information on prework and requirements is on the troop website. 3) 2003 summer camp
