Troop 1 Parents Meeting Monday October 7, 2002 PRESENT: Ken Boss, Dana Jenson, Chris Klaren, Steve
Murphy, Lisa Musgrave OLD BUSINESS: 1) Review/approve previous
meeting – the minutes were approved. 2) Treasure's report – As
of Sep 19, the troop had a balance of $854.29. This includes approximately $200 of scout accounts, but does
not include approximately $100 of pending deposits. 3) Review activities for
last month: 3.a) Rank advancements –
Kevin Murphy completed his Eagle Scout Board of Review in September, and one
other scout is in the process of completing his Eagle paperwork and Board of
Review. Another scout has completed
his First Class requirements and needs to schedule his Board of Review. The group discussed concerns from some parents that their scouts were not sure where they were in the advancement process. Some scouts, with awareness of how close they may be to the next rank, might work with someone to complete their requirements. Steve indicated he would be willing to start working with the scouts in this activity, and that he would talk to Al about it. 3.b) Fall Camporee, September 20-22. Great weather, lots of activities, nobody should have gone home bored. Accolades to Troops 1 and 55 volunteers for hosting the Sundance/Wabuha Districts Fall Camporee. 3.c) Merit badge make-up day, Ingawanis, Oct 5. This was set up as a go-on-your-own activity for Saturday Oct 5. None of the 8 scouts at the Oct 6 meeting had attended. 4) Review scheduled
activities for current month: 4.a) Order of the Arrow
Fall Fellowship, Oct 18-19. Al will
make arrangements at the next troop meeting for the troop’s candidates and
olingomats. 4.b) Scouting for Food,
Oct 19. Dana was not sure where Pack
25 is with this, but will check with them at Roundtable on Oct 10. Troop 1 is still planning to pick up the
filled bags Saturday morning Oct 19.
More information should be available at the next scout meeting. 4.c) Rifle Shooting merit
badge shooting qualification, Oct 26.
Ken will hold a Rifle Shooting merit badge qualification at Black Hawk
Park for the scouts that need it to complete the merit badge. Troop safety rules require a parent to be
present at shooting sports activities.
Scouts should bring a parent and sack lunch to the St. Ed’s parking
lot at 9:00 AM. Ken will have more
information at upcoming troop meetings. 4.d) St. Ed’s Fall Festival – The troop has been asked to help with the Fall Festival in various capacities: Saturday setup, Sunday parking, games, and scout demonstrations. The troop committee is concerned that a great deal of support is being asked from a relatively small troop. We decided that we would host the water balloon slingshot and help park cars. Steve will communicate this to the festival chairman, Randy Johnson. 4.e) Merit Badge College,
Nov 2. 14 scouts have registered for
24 merit badges. We expect to receive
the merit badge books at the Oct 10 roundtable, and will distribute them at
the following troop meeting. Scouts
are encouraged to start on their prework NOW. They can find the requirements and prework information on the
troop website. 5) 2002/2003 camping &
activity planning update. The planned
activities through Aug 2003 are shown on the latest schedule. 6) Popcorn sales update. Order forms were distributed to the scouts
before the Sep 27 start date. A
patrol competition is underway for the highest per-scout average sales, with
the winning patrol receiving special privileges at an upcoming campout. Sales continue through Nov 6. NEW BUSINESS: 1) Fees for adults accompanying troop campouts. Currently the troop does not ask for food or camping fees for adults accompanying troop campouts. (However, adults do pay fees such as canoe rental, higher-priced campground fees, high adventure trips, and activities requiring admission.) Although no data was collected or presented, it is believed that the current camping fees paid by the scouts do not cover the cost of the campouts, and is thus further subsidized by the troop. The group discussed the reasons for the adult exemptions, the main one being that it encourages rather than discourages parent participation. Given the apparent economics of the situation, the group decided that adults accompanying their scouts on campouts shall pay the camping fees, while those without scouts in the troop (primarily leaders) shall not be asked to pay the campout fees. 2)
2003 summer camp planning. Al was not
present and this item was deferred to next month. 3) Wreath Sales – Lisa
stated that the troop will need to place its order to the nursery 3 weeks
before delivery. This will allow the
scouts to gather orders Oct 13 through Nov 3, with the wreaths arriving and
ready for distribution on Monday, Nov 25.
The prices from the nursery are the same as last year. Lisa will bring the forms and information
to the next scout meeting. 4) Philmont 2004
registration – The troop is making preliminary plans for a high-adventure
backpacking trip to the Philmont Scout Reservation in Cimarron, New Mexico in
2004. Reservations need to be made
about a year and one-half in advance due to the program’s popularity. November 9 has been set by Philmont for
making reservations for 2004. This
requires many attempted phone calls until someone finally gets through to
make a troop reservation. Al is
making arrangements for a number of parents accompany him to his office in
the morning of Nov 9 where nearby phones could be operated with redial until
someone gets through. The group
believes that would be an effective method to make the reservation, but also
wants to have more discussion on the duration and costs of the event, as well
as to determine scout interest, before registering. We will discuss this further at the next parents meeting. NEXT PARENTS MEETING: Monday, November 4, 7:00
PM, St. Ed’s cafeteria TABLED FOR FUTURE
