Troop 1 Parents Meeting

Monday December 2, 2002

PRESENT:  Anne Cook, Jamie Cook, Al Degenhardt, Kathy Demsky, Mary Euritt, Dana Jenson, Chris Klaren, Lisa Musgrave

OLD BUSINESS:

1) Review/approve previous meeting minutes – the minutes were approved

2) Treasure's report – As of Oct 8, the troop accounts had a balance of $778.55, less approximately $50 for uncredited bills and deposits.  Of this balance, about $100 is in the Scouts’ accounts.

3) Review activities for last month:

3.a) Rank advancements – Brian Klaren earned his Bronze Eagle Palm in the last two weeks.

3.b) Philmont 2004 registration call-in, Nov 9.  Six scouts, scouters, and relatives manned the phones at EarthTech Nov 9 to call the Philmont Scout Reservation for 2004 reservations.  After an hour or so, we did get an answer, and made reservations for the only date available, August 7-18, 2004.  Today Al received the confirmation in the mail, requesting $50 deposits for each of the 12 people on the crew by Jan 31, with the scouts and adults needing to make a commitment by mid-Jan.  Total cost of the trip is $475 per participant, plus transportation and other traveling costs.  Scouts on the trip need to be 14 years old by Jan 1, 2004, or be 13 and have completed 8th grade before Aug 7, 2004.  The troop is eligible for Philmont once every two years, thus the soonest Troop 1 can attend after 2004 is 2006.  Philmont will be discussed with the scouts at the Dec 15 meeting.

3.c) Ingawanis Electronics/Work Weekend Campout, Nov 16-17.  The scouts raked and burned leaves, earning 4 hours of service credit.  The featured attraction of the weekend was the wild game feed in the evening, where the diners were able to choose from swan, duck, grouse, pheasant, deer, elk, hot dogs, and all the trimmings.  A hot pancake breakfast sent the troop packing the next morning.

3.d) Moving Santa’s Workshop, Dec 1.  About 15 scout and scouter volunteers helped move boxes of gifts in the church basement before the scout meeting to help set up Santa’s Workshop.  Scouts needing certificates of school service should contact Rachael Jenson.

4) Review scheduled activities for current month:

4.a) Eagle Court of Honor, Dec 8; rehearsal Dec 7.  Scouts are to meet at the church on Saturday, Dec 7 at 1:00 PM for rehearsal.  It is very important that all scouts attend rehearsal as they will all have a role in the ceremony that needs to be rehearsed.  On Sunday, all scouts need to meet at the church at 1:00 PM to help set up and rehearse any last minute changes.  Scouts are to wear the Class A dress uniform – scout shirt, red t-shirt, khaki slacks, belt, dark socks, dark shoes (leather, not tennis shoes), merit badge sash, and Order of the Arrow sash (if OA member).

4.b) Troop Christmas party.  After some discussion, the group decided to hold a Holiday Party after the Christmas rush on Jan 5 6:30-8:30 in the cafeteria.  Steve is coordinating the scouts drawing for names.

5) Wreath sales update.  Lisa reported that sales total $3253 so far, of which $900 is to Covenant.  This is up from last year’s sales of $1900, even when the large Covenant purchase is considered.  Great job scouts!  Please bring the money to Lisa no later than December 8 (bring it to the rehearsal or the Court of Honor).

6) Popcorn sales update.  Sharon sent information indicating that popcorn sales totaled $1773, resulting in total profit of $568.35.  This will be split 70/30 with the scouts, with the scouts receiving $397.86 and the troop $170.49.  Another great fund raising effort!

7) National Jamboree, Summer 2005, follow-up.  The Council is taking applications for the Jamboree.  A non-refundable, maybe transferable, deposit of $150 is required, with total cost of approximately $1500 (yes it’s a lot of money, but there’s a lot of time for the scouts to earn most of the amount).  The Council will establish a provisional troop from the applicants and they will begin meeting about 9 months in advance of the early August Jamboree.  We do not currently have information on age or rank minimums, but brochures are available at the scout office.

8) Troop campout meals & menus (Steve, Dana, Chris) – deferred until next meeting.

NEW BUSINESS:

1) Harlem Globetrotters, Dec 27th, UNI Dome.  The following was received from the scout office: “The Harlem Globetrotters will be coming to Cedar Falls on December 27th.  Their game will begin at 7pm at the UNI-Dome.  Scouts and their families can purchase reduced cost tickets for $12 prior to December 20th and receive a special patch.  They will be holding a special "Globetrotter University" beginning at 5 pm for the Scouts which will include an open discussion time, photo opportunities, team history, and a short clinic.  Tickets are normally $17 and $20.”  Additional information will be shared with the scout families when it becomes available.

2) Ook Pik (winter campout).  Steve is planning a winter campout for the troop, and has had some discussions with the scouts.  The outfitter provides all outdoor clothing and gear, and the scouts will have a number of winter activities available, after which they will sleep in an igloo that they have constructed.  Although a date has not been set, the 2-1/2 day trip to Ely is expected to cost $90 per person.  The group discussed the possibility of the troop leaving before school ends on a Friday, and there was a general consensus that the troop should not promote activities that remove the scouts from school.  However, there is a 3-day weekend in January that could possibly work out.

NEXT PARENTS MEETING:

Due to schedule interference, a new date will be set up for the January meeting or another parent will be asked to chair the meeting.

TABLED FOR FUTURE MEETINGS:

1) Troop trailer insurance (Al, indefinite)

2) 2005 National Jamboree (when appropriate)

3) 2003 Summer Camp Planning (Feb 2003)

4) Troop budget (Jan 2003, Steve, Dana)

5) Outdoor Activities Chairman (Jan 2003, Chris)
