Troop 1 Parents Meeting Monday July 7, 2003 PRESENT: Christiane Benson, Ken Boss, Anne Cook,
Jamie Cook, Al Degenhardt, Mary Euritt, Faye Graham, Dana Jenson, Greg Kent, Chris
Klaren OLD BUSINESS: 1) Review/approve previous
meeting minutes – the minutes were approved. 2) Treasure's report – After
summer camp, the scouts’ troop accounts total $818, and the general fund is
currently empty. However, there are
pending deposits of approximately $300 for the general fund that will improve
the troop solvency. 3) Review activities for
last month: 3.a) Rank Advancements -
No rank advancements occurred during the last month, however, 6 scouts are
ready for their Star rank board of review at the next meeting. 3.b) Jamboree Contingent
Troop Meeting, WSR June 11 – Currently 6 Troop 1 scouts are registered for
the Jamboree. 5 scouts and their dads
attended the June 11 meeting where more information regarding event planning
was shared. The jamboree scouts will
be attending a number of contingent troop meetings throughout the next 2
years. However, it was made quite
clear to the scouts that these meetings are not intended to restrict
participation with the scouts’ “home” troops during this time. 3.c) Troops 1 and 144
Get-Together, June 15 – The parents and scouts got together for a picnic and
had a great time getting to know one another before leaving for summer camp. 3.d) Pop can fundraiser
June 18 & 21 – This was a successful fundraiser, as the troop netted $213
dollars from 3 or 4 streets in the neighborhood. The profit includes about $30 in donations. The participating adults and scouts see
some real potential to improve this type of fundraiser, and are currently
looking at doing another one right after the Labor Day weekend. 3.e) Summer Camp wrap-up,
June 29 - July 5 – Summer camp at L.E. Phillips Scout Reservation was great,
it was a fantastic week with Troops 1 and 144 camping together. There was always something for the scouts
to do, from structured activities to free time in the early afternoon and
evening. The camp took good care of
the adults also, as many participated in the Low and High Cope
activities. The two troops
demonstrated tremendous spirit during the week, setting the standard for
having fun. The scouts completed 38
merit badges during the week, and partially completed another eight. 4) Review scheduled
activities for current month: 4.a) The recently
completed summer camp is our July campout.
Al will poll the scouts to see what they would like to do in August
and throughout the fall, spring, and winter seasons. 5) Ad Altare Dei update –
Dana reported that 7 of the 8 scouts that started the Catholic religious
medal program have completed their workbooks and that they have been turned
in for approval. It is expected that
board of reviews will be scheduled for the scouts sometime in the next 2-6
weeks. 6) Summer campouts &
activities, July & August – this item covered in 4.a above. 7) New camping equipment
update – The troop currently has the stoves and tables it needs with the
present membership. Ken is looking at
purchasing one more lantern and one new lantern globe to complete the
equipment needs. NEW BUSINESS: 1) Order of the Arrow – 3
scouts were elected by their fellow Troop 1 scouts last spring for Ordeal
membership in the Order of the Arrow.
Chris asked to be considered as the adult candidate for Troop 1 this
fall and was approved by the committee.
The candidates are encouraged to participate in the call-out ceremony
at Camp Ingawanis 7:30 PM Tuesday, July 15.
After the call-out, the candidates will perform their ordeal service
at Fall Fellowship that is expected to be held in October 2003. It is likely that several scouts and
adults will undergo their Brotherhood initiation at the same time. 2) Summer Camp for First
Year Scouts – The group discussed issues with new scouts attending
out-of-council summer camps, that sometimes results in a new scout returning
home early due to home-sickness. The
committee agreed that for future out-of-council summer camps, First Year
Scouts must either 1) be accompanied by a parent, or 2) have successfully
completed at least 2 prior weekend long campouts without their parents. However, they will be welcome to attend our
council camp at Camp Ingawanis during a year the troop chooses to camp there,
as it’s close proximity to the metro area makes it easier for the scouts to
see their parents during the week. NEXT PARENTS MEETING: Monday, August 4, 7:00 PM,
