Troop 1 Parents Meeting

Sunday October 12, 2003

PRESENT:  Christy Benson, Anne Cook, Jamie Cook, Al Degenhardt, Bruce Demsky, Kathy Demsky, Chris Klaren, Steve Murphy, Lisa Musgrave

OLD BUSINESS:

1) Review/approve previous meeting minutes – the minutes were approved.

2) Treasurer's report – Dana was not present and no report was available.

3) Review activities for last month:

3.a) Rank Advancements – During the last month, 3 Scouts received Eagle palms, 2 received their Life advancements, and a number of merit badges were awarded.

3.b) Adventureland campout, Sep 13-14.  5 Scouts and 4 adults attended the damp, but very fun, weekend.

3.c) X-treme Winnebago All-Council Camporee, September 19-21.  (3) Troop 1 scouts ran one of the activities during the mid-afternoon shift.  Some that attended the event commented that it appeared to be well-planned and organized.  The fireworks display Saturday night was awesome.

3.d) Paintball/Shooting Sports Campout, Oct 10-12.  (6) Scouts and (2) adults attended the campout, and once again had a great time at the paintball course.  In the future we should remember that paintballing is a $25 activity, not $15-$20.

3.e) Scouting for Food, Oct 11.  12 Scouts and 8 adults campaigned the Ridgeway-Prospect-Kimball triangle, collecting bags of cans from the residents.  Approximately 900 lbs. Of canned and misc. dry goods were collected and donated to the NE Iowa Food Bank.  We will consider expanding our collection area next year as our area this year was completed fairly quickly.

3.f) Fall Festival parking, Oct 12.  Two shifts of 5-6 scouts per shift and 5 adults overall parked cars from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the St. Ed’s Fall Festival.  Everyone worked together well and the event was conducted with no fender-benders.

4) Review scheduled activities for current month:

4.a) Show & Deliver St. Ed’s popcorn sales Oct 18-19.  The Troop has ordered “Show & Deliver” popcorn to be old at next weekend’s Saturday and Sunday masses.  A number of openings are left for Sunday masses, go to the troop website at <<address removed>> for more information.  This is a great way for scouts to earn money for their troop accounts in addition to the traditional “Take Order” sales that are also underway for the Troop and Jamboree sales.

4.b) Pop can fundraiser, late October.  Steve indicated that this is still planned, and he indicated that the Scouts will receive some help on marketing the effort to improve its return.

4.c) Merit Badge College update, Nov 1.  The merit badge classes have been confirmed, and the merit badge books and prework sheets are ready for the scouts to be picked up to begin work.  Contact Chris Klaren at ph. 233-7907 or email at cklaren1@mchsi.com to pick up.

5) Popcorn sales.  In addition to the sale after masses next weekend, order forms have been distributed to almost all of the scouts to begin taking sales orders immediately.  Sales will continue for most of November, with the order forms to be returned to Chris Klaren by Nov 30.

6) Wreath sales.  Wreath sales will begin next Sunday night after Scouts receive order forms.  This has been a popular and profitable troop and scout account fund raiser in past years.  Lisa is investigating placing an order form in the church bulletin and sending forms to businesses that advertise in it.  The Troop may also order wreaths for “Show  & Deliver” sales after masses on a weekend that is to be determined.

7) Philmont 2004 update – 5 Scouts and 4 adults are registered to attend, and several other Scouts in the troop are considering it.  Philmont limits group size to 4 adults maximum and 8 Scouts maximum for this trip.  Any interested Scouts should contact Al very soon, as after January 1st the openings will be made available to scouts outside of our Troop.

8) Jamboree Update – Contingent meeting Oct 25, 1:00-4:30 PM, Ingawanis.  Scouts that have been confirmed as registered for the 2005 Jamboree should plan to attend this update meeting.  All five council troops have been filled (36 scouts in each troop), however, the council will continue to take names for a waiting list in case scouts drop out of the troops due to a change in plans.
