Troop 1 Parents Meeting

Monday March 1, 2004

PRESENT:  Christiane Benson, Jon Beyer, Kirk Brownson, Steven Burkart, Cathy Cordray, Steve Davis, Al Degenhardt, Mary Euritt, Chris Klaren, Steve Murphy, John Musgrave

OLD BUSINESS:

1) Review/approve previous meeting minutes – the minutes were approved.

2) Treasurer's report – The troop bank account has a balance of $5054.01.  Expected payments and income during the month leaves the troop general fund with $830.40, with an additional $1643.63 in the scout accounts.

3) Review activities for last month:

3.a) Rank Advancements – 9 merit badges were earned last month (7 of them Eagle required), 12 new members to the troop earned their Scout rank badge, 1 Scout earned First Class, and 2 others earned their Life Scout rank.  9 Scouts and 6 adults earned the Red Flannel award.  A busy month!

3.b) Klondike Derby, Feb 7 – Al reported that the 7 Troop 1 Scouts participating in this year’s event earned 1st place in the patrol competition, the first time in his 13 years with the Troop that they have finished this high.  The troop demonstrated a high proficiency in Scouting skills to earn the points needed to win.  Great job Scouts!!  Al will contact Mrs. Mitchell to see if the trophy can be displayed in the St. Ed’s trophy case.

3.c) Scout Sunday, Feb 8 – There was a great turn-out by the Scouts and leadership for mass and to serve coffee and donuts afterwards.  There was some discussion regarding support of next year’s Scout Sunday services at churches besides St. Ed’s of whom some of our new Scouts may be members.

3.d) Red Flannel Campout, Feb 14-15 – The campout was well attended and feedback at the meeting indicated that the Scouts had a great time.  The weather was chilly and the chili was good!

3.e) Flapjacker ticket sales at HyVee Feb 21 & 28 – Craig indicated in earlier correspondence that the Scouts sold $886.30 in pancake tickets (including some free-will donations) for the 2 day effort at HyVee, great result!

4) Review scheduled activities for current month:

4.a) Flapjackers pancake breakfast & bake sale, Mar 6 – The Scout and adult shifts have been filled for Saturday.  Al will call all of the workers to remind them of their shift assignments.  Remember, any youth that are working will eat for free.  Families are asked to donate baked goods for the bake-sale taking place at the site.  Please bring your unpriced items to the UAW Hall between 4:30 and 5:30 PM Friday, or early Saturday morning.  You may also drop these items off Friday night at the Murphy’s, 124 Terrace Drive, a few blocks from St. Ed’s.  Thank you for your support.

4.b) Lakeland Merit Badge College, Clear Lake, Mar 6 – The troop will not be attending this event as no interest from the Scouts was received.

4.c) Eagle Scout Orientation, Mar 9 & 11 – Star and Life Scouts that may be earning their Eagle rank during the next year must attend this mandatory orientation.  It is recommended that at least one parent attend with their Scout to better understand the requirements and application.  The orientations are being held at Latter Day Saints Church, Garden Ave. & Pleasant Dr, Cedar Falls, March 9 at 7:00 PM, and Hammond Ave. Brethren Church, 1604 Hammond Ave., Waterloo, March 11 at 7:00 PM.

4.d) Wilderness Survival campout, Mar 12-14 – The Patrol Leaders Council decided that this 2 night campout will leave Friday evening from St. Ed’s and return Sunday morning.  The campout will be at WSR, where they will build their shelter for Saturday night.  A cabin will be available for those not wanting to camp outside in mid-March.  More information will be communicated when it is available.

4.e) Ad Altare Dei retreat at Mason City, Mar 27 – Several Scouts previously indicating interest may have changed their minds.  Steve will check to see if this is restricted to Scouts 7th grade or higher, or if 6th grade Scouts can participate.

5) Philmont registrations update – We were unable to find a Scout either inside or outside the Troop to fill the 8th Scout position available, and have notified Philmont of the change.  The Philmont group should begin meeting sometime soon to make travel plans.  2 Scouts still owe their final $200-$225 payment to the Troop.

6) Summer Camp Jun 20-26 planning & registration.  The Troop is registered for the Birch Knoll campsite at Ingawanis June 20-26.  Fees are $155 per scout and $25 per adult for the week.  New Scouts will work on the Trail to Eagle program, and can register for 3 merit badges, one of which will either be Swimming or First Aid.  Older scouts can register for up to 5 merit badges.  Contact Al to sign up for the merit badges of your choice and to make your $25 deposit.

7) Sun Rivers District Camporee, Apr 30 – May 2.  The Scouts will decide in the next month or so whether to attend this District Camporee or camp at Backbone during the same weekend as originally planned.

8) Troop 1 parents guide discussion/ratification - The group received the latest copy of the Parents Guide, which is intended to serve as an information resource on the operation of our Troop.  Please review the latest revision on the Troop website at /ParentsGuide/Troop1ParentsGuide and contact Chris Klaren with any suggested changes before the next Parents Meeting.  Proposed changes will be discussed at the April Parents Meeting, after which the group will decide whether or not to ratify the Guide as by-laws for Troop 1.

NEW BUSINESS:

1) Troop Re-chartering – The Troop will be completing its annual registration of the Troop, the Scouts, and the registered adult leadership in the next few weeks.  The Troop currently has 31 Scouts and 10 registered adults.  Registration fees are $10 per Scout and adult, $20 for the Troop, and $10.80 for each Boy’s Life subscription.  In previous years, the Troop paid for registrations and Boy’s Life for those wanting it.  This results in a $721.60 rechartering fee (if every family wanted Boy’s Life), an amount that would essentially empty the treasury after 3 arduous fundraisers since October.  As the Troop needs to purchase additional camping equipment this year and continue to purchase awards as the Scouts earn them, the group decided that each family should take care of its own rechartering expenses.  For example, 2 Scouts and 1 Boy’s Life subscription would total $30.80.  Please make payment to Dana by April 1.  Please talk to Al or another adult leader if this creates a financial hardship, as we do not want this to prevent any of our boys from participating in Boy Scouts.

2) Council Candy Bar fundraiser – The Council is currently holding a fundraiser by selling the World’s Finest chocolates.  After a brief discussion, the group decided we were just about all fundraisered-out, and that we would pass on this opportunity.

3) Boundary Waters 2005 – The group began discussion on a trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe wilderness in summer 2005.  Steve Murphy indicated he would lead the effort to organize the trip if there is sufficient interest.

ADJOURNMENT:  There was no further new business and the meeting was adjourned.
