Troop 1 Parents Meeting Monday May 3, 2004 PRESENT: Jon Beyer, Ken Boss, Al Degenhardt, Craig Drewelow, Mary Euritt, Dana Jenson, Chris Klaren OLD BUSINESS: 1) Review/approve previous
meeting minutes – the minutes were approved. 2) Treasurer's report - The Scout accounts currently total $2156.81, and the Troop general fund balance is $941.35. The general fund will be increased when the summer camp fees for 3 Scouts are received, and will be decreased by the food bill from the Backbone campout. 3) Review activities for
last month: 3.a) Rank Advancements –
Kris Boss received his Eagle Gold Palm, and Luke Jenson earned his Personal
Management merit badge. 3.b) Sports Extravaganza
Campout, Apr 17-18. This campout was
canceled due to a lack of adult leaders. 3.c) Backbone Campout, Apr
30 – May 2. Al and Ken said it was a
great campout for the 15 Scouts and 5 adults that attended. The Scouts went on a hike through the
spine of the backbone and had a blast, completing the requirement for a 5
mile hike for Second Class rank. 4) Review scheduled
activities for current month: 4.a) Hiking merit badge, May & June. Many of the Scouts in the Troop attended the last two pre-meeting merit badge sessions for the Hiking merit badge. Our first 10 mile hike is scheduled for Saturday, 8 May, and information on it will be emailed separately and posted on the website. Current plans are to finish with a 20 mile hike in late June. 4.b) St. Ed’s Spring Carnival, May 12. Steve Murphy will call the Scouts to see who wants to work the event. In addition, Blessed Sacrament has asked for Troop 1 Scout help at their carnival on May 10, and Al has contacted Scouts to help out at 6:00 PM at Blessed Sacrament. 4.c) Shooting Sports activity, May 22. Ken Boss will hold a gun safety clinic at 6:30 at St. Ed’s prior before the May 16 meeting. It will be modeled after the Hunter Safety course basics. The Patrol Leaders will be contacting the Scouts in their patrols to provide information. Rifle and shotgun shooting will be held May 22 at Black Hawk Park. Scouts and adults will need to meet at St. Ed’s parking lot before 8:00 AM. A SCOUT’S PARENT MUST BE PRESENT FOR THEIR SON TO BE ABLE TO SHOOT THE GUNS. Scouts may qualify for the Rifle Shooting merit badge, and will be shooting clay pigeons with the shotguns. Gun cleanup will be held immediately afterwards. Parents may bring their own guns, and fees for the bullets and shotgun shells are yet to be determined. 4.d) Pope Pius XII Religious Award presentation May 23. The awards will be presented at 9:00 AM mass, and all Scouts are encouraged to attend. Steve Murphy will be sending invitations to the award recipients and the Troop. 5) Summer Camp Jun 20-26
update. The registration has been
submitted and fees are paid in full to the Council. (3 Scouts need to reimburse the troop yet.) Physicals will be needed for the Scouts
and adults attending. 6)
Troop tent inventory. Based on the
tent usage at Backbone, it appears the Troop needs another tent or two. Ken will buy a tent at WalMart if the
price is right, and Ken will ask Steve to check prices at Cabela’s. 7)
Philmont planning. The planning is
well underway, and we will soon be purchasing backpacking stoves for the
trip. 8) Annual troop re-charter update. The re-charter was submitted to the Council the second week of April. Fees (which were paid by the adults and Scouts) came to $528. This represents 30 Scouts, 14 registered adults (4 which were paid by the Pack as a multiple adult), and 10 Boy’s Life subscriptions. An additional $34.38 was used to purchase the new Quality unit patches the Troop earned. 9) Backpacking merit badge update. Activity with the Backpacking merit badge is planned after the Hiking merit badge is compete. 10) Camperships/Scoutmaster Fund discussion. This fund would co-fund camperships and purchase gifts for the Scouts at Christmas. Ken and Dana thought this could be easily funded by several pop can fundraisers and will follow up with the Scouts to get one underway. NEW BUSINESS: 1) Personal Fitness merit badge to start in June. The Troop will begin meeting in late June to cover the preliminary requirements for this Eagle-required merit badge. Baseline fitness evaluations will be held on July 24, and follow-up evaluations will be held every two weeks thereafter through October 16. This is a great opportunity for the new Scouts, as well as older ones, to earn this merit badge. 2) Summer Troop
camping/activities schedule. Al will
work with the Troop to determine what they would like to do for campouts in
July and August (we’re doing summer camp in June). There has been some discussion among the Scouts regarding a
canoe trip. 3) Jamboree – Al asked if
his Jamboree contingent Troop could borrow the canopy and gas stoves for the
2005 Jamboree, with the understanding they would be replaced if damaged. The group approved the request. 4) Adult Training – The group discussed the need for training for adult leaders in the Troop. We agreed to circulate emails to collaborate on developing descriptions for the positions on the Troop Committee, with the goal to have them ready by June 1st to review with the new leaders shortly thereafter. ADJOURNMENT: There was no further new business and the
meeting was adjourned. NEXT PARENTS MEETING: Monday, June 7, 2004, 7:00
