Troop 1 Parents Meeting

Monday June 7, 2004

PRESENT:  Steve Davis, Mary Euritt, Dana Jenson, Chris Klaren, Steve Murphy, John Musgrave

OLD BUSINESS:

1) Review/approve previous meeting minutes.  The minutes were approved.

2) Treasurer's report.  The bank balance is very close to last month’s.

3) Review activities for last month:

3.a) Rank Advancements.  Congratulations to Zach Benson who earned his Second Class rank last month.

3.b) Blessed Sacrament Cub Scout Carnival, May 10.  Several of our older Scouts helped run the games at the carnival with the intent to generate Scouting interest at the school.

3.c) St. Ed’s Spring Carnival, May 12.  Steve Murphy reported that the water balloon launcher was once again a hit, even in the rain.  350 balloons were loaded and shot, and there is talk of building a second launcher for water fights.

3.d) Shooting Sports, May 22.  The gun safety training was conducted at a May Scout meeting.  However, the shooting sports activity was rained out and has been tentatively rescheduled for August 14.

3.e) Pope Pius XII Religious Award presentation, May 23.  The presentation of the medals went well, and we had a good turnout of other Scouts in the Troop at mass.

3.f) Hiking Merit badge, various days.  (5) 10 mile hikes were conducted by June 6, and several other parents in the Troop are scheduling more 10 mile hikes in advance of the 20 mile hike scheduled for June 27.  We have had good participation from within the Troop, many of them outside of the Philmont group.  Way to go!

3.g) Pop can fundraiser, June 2.  The Scouts organized a pop can fundraiser for the Memorial Day weekend, delivering fliers the Friday before, and picking up the cans the Wednesday after.  Approximately 550 fliers were delivered, and a large number of cans were picked up, the largest amount of the 3 fundraisers to-date.  While it is believed that over $300 will be received, the actual total for the redeemed cans was not available and will be reported next month.

4) Review scheduled activities for current month:

4.a) Summer Camp Jun 20-26 update.  Details for summer camp will be discussed at the next Troop meeting on June 13.

4.b) Personal Fitness merit badge.  The first classroom session was held June 6 with 11 Scouts attending.  The next session will be at 6:00 PM before the scheduled Scout meeting.  Please be on time and bring your worksheets if you took them home to work on them.

4.c) Paintball Games at Evansdale, June 12.  The group will leave St. Ed's parking lot at 1:00 PM.  All scouts must have parent's written permission to attend.  Typical costs are $15 to $25 per person for equipment rental and ammunition.  Contact your Senior Patrol leader for more information if needed.  Please note that paintballing will result in some significant welts and bruises.  Make sure proper clothing (something that will probably be ruined) is used to provide padding for the games.

4.d) Hiking Merit badge.  As mentioned above, various parents are planning 10 mile hikes in preparation for the 20 mile hike on June 27.

5) Ad Altare Dei update.  2 Scouts have expressed interest and will soon begin the study process.

6) Summer Troop camping/activities schedule.  Dates for camping and Troop activities have been established by the Scouts and are shown on the current schedule.

7) Troop tent inventory update.  Ken purchased a new 4-man tent as discussed last month.  Also, John Musgrave will donate a large self-erecting tent to the Troop.

8) Philmont planning.  The physical preparation is underway with the Hiking merit badge activity.  An informational meeting with Philmont participants from last year will be held at Vinton this Friday evening.  The group expects to have one or two shakedown campouts in July.

9) Backpacking merit badge.  This merit badge will be offered to anyone in the Troop that is interested, although Scouts not attending Philmont will need to make their own arrangements for at least one of the 2-night backpacking trips and the 5-night trip needed for the requirements.  Requirements are available through the Troop web site.

10) Scoutmaster Fund fundraiser.  The group discussed several uses for and methods of raising funds for a Scoutmaster fund.  The fund’s primary purpose would be to provide seed money for camperships for Scouts in need, as well as provide money for Christmas gifts from the Scoutmaster to the Scouts.  We decided the $300 from the Sturgis falls fundraiser could be used to seed the account that would be tracked by the Troop Treasurer.  We also discussed using 5% or some other percentage of the Troop’s portion of fundraisers to provide funds.  Discussion will continue at the next parents meting.

NEW BUSINESS:

1) Adult Leader Position Training.  The group discussed creating folders or fact sheets for each adult position in the Troop so that someone new in a position (such as treasurer, committee chair, fundraiser chair, etc.) would have an idea of what to do and who to contact.  We will bring this up again next month.

2) Boundary Waters 2005 – Steve Murphy discussed minimum requirements needed to attend the Boundary Waters trip next year.  All Scouts must have the Swimming merit badge, and it can be earned at summer camp or the district swim program next February.  Each group of canoes must have at least one adult that has completed the BSA Lifesaving course.  We need to know by December the number of people that will be participating and the dates for the trip.

3) Sturgis Falls fundraiser June 26.  The Troop was asked if we would be interested in providing 16 people to serve beer at the Sturgis Falls festival Saturday night from 8:00 PM to 11:30 PM for $300.  After some discussion, the group felt that 16 parents could be found to volunteer for this and agreed to pursue the fundraiser.  An email will be broadcast soliciting volunteers.

4) Construction material fundraiser.  Dana was asked if the Troop would be interested in helping move 500 landscaping bricks for $200.  Dana will set a date for this activity.

ADJOURNMENT:  There was no further new business and the meeting was adjourned.
