Troop 1 Parents Meeting

1) Meeting called to order by Jon Beyer

2) Attending: Jon Beyer; Michelle Boswell; Steve Davis; Dana Jenson; Arvella & Greg Kent; Lisa Musgrave; Jim O’Connor; Steve Murphy; Dan Murphy

3) Previous meeting minutes – approved

4) Reports:

·         Scoutmaster – Jon reported that Al got an email that Amy from the scout office who said that the Ice House museum in CF needed clean up volunteers. They started Tuesday the 17th and will work throughout the week starting at 10am. Wear old clothes and lunch will be provided.

·         Secretary – no report

·         Treasurer (update provided after the meeting)Total $6,369.64 (General Fund $-42.97, Scoutmaster Fund $1,423.13, Shed Account $1,285.64, Scout Accounts $3,703.84).  The general fund was used to pay summer camp early registration and will be reimbursed by Scouts or their accounts in the amount of approximately $2,000.  The Shed Account will fund the donor sign for the troop garage and expenses for the upcoming recognition dinner.

·         Outdoor/activities coordinator

·         Hickory Hills campout, May 31 – June 2, report.  The park was excellent and quiet.  Steve M. said the park ranger was very complimentary about Troop 1.  There was discussion about inappropriate swear words used by a senior scout and an adult on Saturday.  The scouts also need to respect the Troop and other peoples chairs and camp equipment.  Jim O. agreed to address these issues at a future scout meeting.

·         Summer camp update – the early registration has been paid to lock-in lower rates. Michelle reported that 19 scouts were going.  At this point Al D., Jon B., and Grant W. are adult we know about that are attending.  We’ve hoping that more adults will attend.  Steve M. said Mike P. and Community Motors could provide one passenger van to pull the trailer.  We will need more drivers to accommodate all those going.  We will meet by the scout garage that Sunday morning to leave for camp.  Mass parking at St. Ed’s at 7:30am Mass will not interfere with leaving for camp.  Arvella K. said she has the medical forms for most scouts but not the first year scouts or new scouts.  Jim K. will be asked to medical coordinated forms for the 1st years scouts.  Arvella will work to assure she has forms for all scouts attending camp.  Arvella also suggested that the Troop trailer be loaded with gear and personal bags on Saturday, June 28th, time TBD.

·         Hiking merit badge update (update provided after the meeting) – Scheduled hikes are being delayed postponed for an undetermined length of time due to conditions beyond our control.  Hikes will be rescheduled when those conditions have been resolved.

·         Advancement coordinator

·         Advancement activities – no report

·         Dan Murphy gave the parents an oral report about his Eagle Scout project that was completed recently.  Dan report was well received by the parents who asked questions and congratulated Dan on this accomplishment.

·         Chaplain - Jim O. announced that David Ticknor will be the new Chaplain’s assistant.  Jim will coordinate a ceremony at a future scout meeting for David.

·         Training coordinator

·         Equipment coordinator

·         Storage shed – Steve M. reported the Troop building sign is finished and stored away from the flood.  He will coordinate getting it hung.

·         The Appreciation Cookout / Court of Honor is on for July 13th.  Event planning is underway.  Steve D. will coordinate getting out invitations.  People will be invited to tour the building starting at 5pm with the cookout from 6pm to 8pm.  Dana J. will help organize the event.  Steve M. will organize a date to have the scouts clean and organize the Troop building and the athletic side.  The Court of Honor will need to be planned by Troop leaders if this is held in coordination with this event.

·         Campouts during severe weather, emergency plans for rains, tornadoes, floods, etc. - Dana J. will provide the Troop with an emergency radio for use on campouts.

·         Fundraising coordinator

·         Pop can collection fundraiser, June 7 report.  The can collection is believed to have been very good, although the dollar value was not available. The next can drive is scheduled for July 19th.  Steve D. has given that redemption center a key to the garage and they will pick up the cans and bottles after each can drive.

·         Knights of Columbus pancake breakfast fundraiser, May 18, report.  The breakfast raised $350.  Profits will be used for summer camp transportation costs to Camp Phillips.  The parents discussed next years dates and Dana J. will work to schedule those breakfast fundraisers in February around spring break and the Flapjackers breakfast. ·         Sturgis Falls Beverage Pour Adult Fundraiser (update provided after the meeting) – due to a change in venue forced by the recent flooding in Cedar Falls, the beer tents will reportedly not be in operation and the fundraising opportunity will not be available this year.

·         UNI Dome concessions - no update

·         Membership coordinator

·         Round Table Update – no report.  Greg K. agreed to attend Round Tables in the future but asked others to remind him of the dates and to attend.

5) Old Business

·         Eagle Claw update – Nick M., David B., Sean O., and Ethan D. will not attend because of conflicts.  Collin B. has elected not to attend Eagle Claw as the only scout from Troop 1.  Jon B. will communicate this information to Al D. and Anne P. at the Council.

·         “Iron Man” patch – The parents asked Jon to request that Chris K. work with Francis M. on this patch.  Francis has previous experience in this area.  The parents support moving forward on this.

·         Parent sign-up calendar – Jon brought a draft of this calendar.  It was suggested that Jon add an area to sign up who will pull the Troop trailer.  The parents asked Jon to present this at a future scout meeting and ask parents to sign up.  Parents will be strongly encouraged to sign up for campouts.  Those parents not wanting to camp should support the Troop in some other manner.

·         Campout planning / permission slips, update – Jon reported that Al had concerns with this tool.  It was decided to table this issue until we had further discussion with Al at a future parent meeting.

·         High adventure activities, update on Sea Base 2009 – no update

·         National Jamboree, July 2010 – Jim O. reported some glitches in National planning but expected everything to be worked out.

6) New Business

·         Boundary Waters - summer 2009.  Steve M. announced he will be coordinating and leading a trip for scouts next summer.  Greg K. and Ken G. will also help.  Scouts must meet swimming requirements to go.  Mike P. will be asked to coordinate this Troop 1 need.  The parents will suggest that Mike communicate to the Council that they find an adult to replace him in coordinating Council swimming training.

7) Announcements

·         Next parents meeting Monday, July 14, 2008 at AJ’s Eatery & Spirits (by Target), meeting starts at 7:30 PM.

8) Upon having completed the evening’s business, the meeting was adjourned.
