Troop 1 Parents Meeting

1) Meeting called to order by Chris Klaren

2) Attending:  Van Blair; Jeff Finley; Dana Jenson; Chris Klaren; Tim Klein; Francis McElroy; Publio Ortiz

3) Approval of previous meeting minutes – June minutes approved.

4) Reports:

·         Scoutmaster – At the last troop meeting, Al announced that he will be stepping down as Scoutmaster after 16 years leading Troop 1.  Al will continue with the troop as a committee member.  Jim Koch has agreed to server as our new Scoutmaster, with the transition occurring in August and September.

·         Secretary – no report

·         Treasurer

·         Treasury balance – $6,071.95 (General Fund $1,063.58, Scoutmaster Fund $1,719.16, Scout Accounts $3,289.21).  Balances do not include remaining Boundary Waters transactions, latest popcorn drive, or various hat transactions.  It was not known at the meeting if this balance included payment to the troop for the Sturgis Falls beverage pour.

·         Outdoor/activities coordinator

·         Troop 1 Court of Honor and family cookout, August 9 – Good turnout, lots of awards, good food.  A good time was had by all.

·         Troop campout, Backbone State Park, July 25-26 – Good campout, lots of fun, 5 mile hike for advancement, patrols cooked own meals.

·         Troop campout, August 28-30 – details to be determined at the next troop meeting.

·         Advancement coordinator

·         Advancement activities – Since the June parents meeting, our Scouts earned 6 rank advancements ( 3-Tenderoot, 2-Second Class, and 1-Star) and 2 merit badges.

·         Merit Badge College, Nov 7 – Information is available on the Council web site to register for the merit badges to be offered at Hawkeye Community College.  Early registration is essential to getting first choices of merit badges.  More information will be forthcoming in troop communications this week.

·         Chaplain

·         Training coordinator

·         Upcoming adult leader training (contact Scout office to register):

o       September 26th,  Boy Scout Leader Specific Training - Time and Location to be announced.

o       October 16-18th, Outdoor Skills Instruction (OSI) - WSR, Marble Rock, 5:00 p.m., registration on Friday night.

·         Youth Protection Training – all registered adults with the troop should plan to complete this BSA required training.  It is available on-line and further information will be communicated in the near future.

·         CPR training – there was some discussion about scheduling CPR training during an upcoming weekend for Scouts and adults that would be interested in attending.

·         Equipment coordinator

·         Equipment needs:  Some of the poles did not match one of the tents at the Backbone campout, even though all tents had been set up and checked out a few weeks earlier. 

·         Fundraising coordinator

·         Pop can collection fundraiser, July 11 report, next scheduled Sep 12 (Steve D), payment status for past collections (Michelle)

·         Council fall popcorn sales – information is available at popcorn meetings this week.  We will need to determine in the next few weeks who will be selling popcorn that is not attending Jamboree.

·         Membership coordinator

·         No update

·         Round Table Update

·         Tim Klein will attend in Round Table in October

5) Old Business

·         Boundary Waters, summer 2009, no report

·         Campout logistics – No one at this meeting knew the status of the campout adult sign-up sheet and whether upcoming campouts had sufficient adult leadership.  This will be resolved at the next troop meeting.

·         National Jamboree, July 2010 – no update

6) New Business

·         St. Ed’s Fall Festival will be held Oct 4, and we anticipate that the troop will be involved with parking and various phases of set-up.

·         Sea Base – Tim commented that the troop should begin the planning process if the younger Scouts intend to go to Sea Base in 2 years.  The 2 year planning horizon is similar to other BSA high adventure camps such as Philmont.

·         The TroopMaster 2005 record-keeping software expired August 18 was upgraded to a 3 year license of TroopMaster 2009.

7) Announcements                             

·         Next parents meeting Monday, September 14, 2009 at AJ’s Eatery & Spirits (by Target), meeting starts at 7:30 PM. 

8) Adjournment – Upon having completed the evening’s business, the meeting was adjourned.
